By Hand Studio
My name is Britt, I am a sewist and sewing educator. I believe everyone can and should learn the skill of sewing.
Sewing is the process of joining two pieces of fabric together, by hand or machine, to make a wide variety of items. I specialize in sewing apparel. I help other sewists get the best fit in their fashion items, and help fit my clients’ individual body shapes, inspiring confidence in what they wear.
My sewing experience started when I was a child, encouraged by my mom and grandmother, both experienced sewists. I sewed my way through high school, university, and my post-grad studies. One of my first jobs was at a fabric store which fed my love of fabric and thread. I gained further experience finishing alterations for two plus size clothing retailers. I’ve also sold sergers, sewing and embroidery machines for a retailer where I also trained others on how to used them. Sewing and sharing my skills with others has been an important part of my life as my husband's career took us from Canada to the United States. What I cherish most about sewing is the vibrant creative communities I’ve had the pleasure of joining in each new place we’ve called home.
Sewing is my passion. I opened By Hand Studio in Riverton, Utah to offer sewing services and continue teaching all ages to sew.
I teach:

Canadian Smocking is a creative style of fabric manipulation. In February of 2024, I had the opportunity to teach Canadian Smocking at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo, owned and operated by Washington State University.
